Great War Aerodrome Takes Off!

September 13-14th, 2008 marked the Great War Aerodrome's first WWI fly in! The weather had been threatening all week long... but suddenly vanished on the day of the show... skys were clear, and despite the unseasonably warm weather, everyone had a great time.  We had a variety of WWI enthusiasts attend, all of whom brought their own flavor of WWI interests. Exactly what we are looking for - a variety of people to participate and create a journey back to a Great War Aerodrome. A Ford Model T added excitement for the kids and a unique perspective to the event. The Aviation Institute of Maintenance Team Chesapeake brought their Nieuport 24 project.  Byrd Aviation Books had every book you could imagine on WWI.  John Gaertner from Blue Swallow Aviation gave a wonderful lecture on the Avro 504 he is building. And Dennis Harbin from Rag Bag Aero Works gave an impromptu lecture on Spad camouflage colorings and markings.  Frank Root showed off his Original Jenny project and Al Todd brought his replica gas fired Lewis Machine gun.   As always, Gordon Campbell was a great host and many folks flew in to enjoy his hamburgers, hotdogs, and Chili.  Snoopy the Flying Ace was also present to share ice cold rootbeer floats!  What a great first event!
